The Institute of Virology - University Medical Center Berlin (Director: Prof. Dr. Drosten) has approximately 90 employees and 8 independent research groups, and hosts the National Reference Center for Coronaviruses.
Prof. Dr. Drosten's research group focuses on the viral diversity, ecology, and epidemiology of coronaviruses across various evolutionary stages, from natural reservoirs to global spread in humans.
The advertised position is part of a DFG-funded project. Overview of the position
We are seeking a highly motivated, dedicated, and conscientious PhD candidate with a passion for virological research and an interest in bioinformatics methods.
You will perform experimental molecular biology work on both animal- and human-adapted coronaviruses, applying infectious disease and serological methods to characterize viral and host determinants that may play a role in cross-species transmission.
In addition, you will conduct virological (molecular biological and cell culture) and proteomic work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities, prepare samples, and analyze data. As part of the project, you will collaborate with internal and nationwide partners, participate in project meetings, and contribute to scientific publications.
You will be employed as a research associate / postdoctoral researcher: In accordance with Section 110 (4), Sentence 3 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG), academic staff are allocated an appropriate amount of working hours for their own further academic qualification.

Requirements:
You hold a university degree in medicine or the natural sciences and have a strong interest in virology and molecular biology methods. You are fluent in written and spoken English, highly proficient in working independently with PCs (confident user of Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and familiar with statistical methods and software.
You work independently, in a structured and meticulous manner, and bring high levels of motivation and resilience. We place a high value on excellent communication skills, commitment, and strong teamwork.
Desirable qualifications / Assets:
- Experience with protein-biochemical and molecular biology techniques (protein and nucleic acid detection methods)
- Knowledge of cell culture techniques

- Paygrade XXX according to TVöD VKA-K. Your job grade depends on your job qualification whereas the experience level depends on the number of working years. The yearly gross salary is hereby provided based on a full time position excluding yearly bonus and additional pay. You may find further information here
