Working at Charité

This subproject of the CRC/TR 412 investigates the development of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in the context of the gut microbiome and nutrition. It focusses on longitudinal experiments in humanized gnotobiotic mice transplanted with stool samples from human subjects of a nutritional intervention studies. The animals are comprehensively metabolically phenotyped with a particular emphasis on liver metabolism and fatty liver development. This research enables a unique combination of a clinical study and animal experiments and aims to decipher microbiome-dependent mechanisms of MASLD pathogenesis. The long-term goal is to identify protective microbial strains that could serve as basis for new microbiome-based therapeutic approaches. The project is being carried out in close cooperation with Prof. Sofia Forslund-Startceva (ECRC and MDC), a leading expert in host-microbiome interactions and high-throughput bioinformatics.
