Working at the Charité

Charité Universitätsmedizin - Berlin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. The Institute of Virology is located in the heart of the vibrant capital Berlin (Charité Campus Mitte), and comprises approximately 100 employees and 10 independent research groups. The institute is home to an international team of researchers working on different viruses in a supportive atmosphere. We are looking for a motivated and committed postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Dr. Oya Cingöz at the Charité Institute of Virology in Berlin. With support from the Einstein Foundation, our lab investigates how retroviruses (such as HIV-1) replicate, their interactions with the immune system and how they target host factors that restrict infection.

This is a full-time position initially offered for a 3 year fixed-term contract, expected to start in the spring of 2025. Dr. Cingöz is dedicated to providing career support and training to the successful candidate, given their passion and dedication to science. If application for external fellowships are desired, we are also happy to support that. 

Job Overview

  • Designing, performing, analyzing experiments

  • Detailed documentation and evaluation of experimental data

  • Publication and presentation of research findings

  • Keeping strictly up to date on the relevant scientific literature

  • Participation in regular lab meetings, journal clubs and institute seminars

  • Contribution to the common tasks within the group and the institute in general

     

  • Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship (in accordance 
    with § 110 BerlHG)

Required:

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, German is not required
  • Completed Ph.D. degree in virology, immunology, cell biology or a related field. (If you are about to receive your degree, but have not done so yet, please get in touch directly)
  • Track record of high-quality, original publications (including preprints)
  • Experience in handling and culturing human pathogens (BSL2 level essential, BSL3 level desirable)
  • Experience in all standard molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology methods (e.g. flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation, reporter assays, microscopy, protein biochemistry, cloning)
  • Experience in bioinformatics analysis of omics datasets (proteomics, transcriptomics)
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Ability to work independently, creatively and carefully
  • Flexibility to work collegially in a group 
  • Passion towards science, with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment

Job Information

  • Salary group E14 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services
  • The working time is full-time with 38.5 hours per week
  • At our company 30 days of vacation are standard
