Working at the Charité
The Charité Centre for Global Health (CCGH), which Charité established in January 2023, aims to develop strong internal, local, national and international activities and partnerships in the field of global health and to support and promote research, teaching and collaboration with politics and all stakeholders in the field of global health. The Centre combines the Institute of Virology, the Institute of International Health (formerly the Institute of Tropical Medicine and International Health) and the Global Engagement Unit. In addition, researchers from other Charité departments and external organizations are affiliated or associated with the Centre. The Centre for Global Health at Charité Berlin is looking for a PhD student in the field of mathematical modelling of vaccination strategies against infectious diseases.
Job Overview

You will come with a high degree of motivation and self-sufficiency and will be expected to work independent and interdisciplinary

You will work closely international collaborators, particularly the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) in Kilifi, Kenia and will be based in Kilifi for several month during their research

You will be researching the optimisation of vaccination programmes in low- and middle-income countries, and Kenya in particular, through the use of serological data. This may include the identification of immunity gaps for vaccine-preventable diseases (e.g., measles and rubella), modelling the risk of outbreaks due to arboviruses (e.g., dengue, Rift Valley Fever and chikungunya), or evidence for ongoing infection acquired immunity for vaccines not included in the infant immunization program as well as in age groups currently not reached by vaccination

You will work closely with KWTRP and will collaborate on the analysis of seroepidemiological data. They will be part of an effort to build capacity in mathematical modelling for infectious diseases in Africa

The position requires a substantial background in programming and, to a slightly lesser degree, infectious disease epidemiology

You will be expected to regularly attend scientific conferences and collaborative visits, including spending a substantial amount of time on site in Kilifi, Kenya

Required:
- A master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, epidemiology, or an equivalent degree or experience in a subject with a strong analytical component
- Evidence of substantial experience with programming in R, Python or similar
- Evidence of understanding of the basic concepts of mathematical modelling for infectious diseases (beyond regression models) as well as of epidemiological measures
- Interest in working in inter-disciplinary teams
- Excellent English communication skills
- Lived experience of studying and/or working in East Africa, ideally Kenya
- Some experience with Bayesian statistics
- Some experience in infectious disease research including serological data

Job Information
- Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services. You can find the collective agreement here
