Working at Charité
The Joint Department: Infectious Diseases, Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care Medicine conducts translational research on infectious and respiratory diseases. The Sander Research Group investigates host-pathogen interactions and the mechanisms of protective immunity to develop and optimize novel vaccines and antimicrobial therapies for infectious diseases. The Gröschel Research Group focuses on innovative approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of tuberculosis, as well as the development and evaluation of AI tools for clinical practice. Our young, interdisciplinary team offers rich opportunities for professional development within a collaborative working environment.
As part of the DFG Research Unit "Hospital-acquired Infections – Unraveling Protective and Predisposing Factors for the Development of Novel Prophylactic Strategies (HAI)" based at our department, the Sander, Gröschel and Buchauer Research Groups are investigating the role of T cells in nosocomial infections. While the role of T cells in viral infections is relatively well understood, their function in bacterial infections—particularly in the transition from colonization to invasive disease—remains unclear. Within this project, we aim to investigate the interplay between existing T-cell immunity, bacterial virulence markers, and the occurrence of nosocomial infections by characterizing pathogen-reactive T cells from patient cohorts, including single-cell sequencing and TCR sequencing, alongside pathogen sequencing and bioinformatic analyses. The project bridges basic and applied research, aiming to improve the diagnostics and prevention of hospital-acquired infections. To drive this effort, we are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to perform wet-lab work and contribute to bioinformatic analyses.
Overview of the position
- You will be responsible for processing clinical samples, including performing advanced cellular immunological assays (cell isolation, T-cell stimulation, MACS- and FACS-based cell isolation and sorting, single-cell sequencing preparation, functional T-cell assays)
- You will handle sample preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS)
- You will contribute to the bioinformatic analysis of data in close collaboration with the project’s Postdoc
- You will collaborate with clinical project partners for sample collection and with core facilities for cell sorting and sequencing
- You will contribute to drafting manuscripts and presenting research findings at national and international conferences
- You will be employed as a research assistant: According to §110 (4), sentence 3, the BerlHG provides that research assistants are to be allotted an appropriate amount of time during their working hours for their own academic development
What we are looking for
- You hold a degree (Master's level or equivalent) in molecular biology (or a related field) and have sound knowledge of immunology, microbiology, or molecular cell biology, combined with a strong interest in infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions.
- Ideally, you have already gained practical experience in cell isolation and flow cytometry.
- Ideally, you possess basic practical or conceptual experience with single-cell sequencing technologies or have a strong interest in learning and applying these methods.
- You have the ability to perform basic bioinformatic analyses of single-cell sequencing datasets, or a strong willingness to acquire these skills.
- You combine keen intellectual curiosity with a strong sense of responsibility.
- You have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment alongside laboratory staff, core facility personnel, and bioinformaticians.
- You possess very good written and spoken English communication skills.
