The Collaborative Research Center/Transregio (CRC/TRR) 241 is inviting applications for up to 3 doctoral (PhD) positions (65% TV-L E13) across a broad range of participating disciplines and research areas in the field of mucosal immunology of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.
In Berlin, CRC/TRR 241 is coordinated by Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and includes collaborative projects with the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) and the German Rheumatism Research Centre (DRFZ, Leibniz Institute).
CRC/TRR 241 is currently in its third funding period and focuses on the interaction between the intestinal barrier (epithelium) and the immune cell compartment of the lamina propria. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of these interactions in order to better understand the diseases and their subtypes, and ultimately to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
CRC/TRR 241 comprises projects investigating the immunology of defined cell populations in the intestine, as well as projects with a strong translational focus. During its first two funding periods, CRC/TRR 241 established a patient cohort that has been comprehensively characterized clinically, endoscopically, and at the molecular level. This resource is available to all research projects within CRC/TRR 241.

Overview of the position
PhD positions:
AG Klose: Impact of epithelial dysfunction on neuro-immune crosstalk in IBD. PhD student with a background in immunology, neuroscience, or epithelial cell biology for a project on the enteric nervous system and mucosal immunology in relation to colitis.
AG Stehle: The role of the γ-chain cytokines-STAT5 axis for epithelial barrier function and intestinal inflammation. PhD student to investigate how the γ-chain cytokine–STAT5 signaling axis regulates immune–epithelial communication and drives intestinal inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease. The project combines cutting-edge approaches, including spectral flow cytometry, single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing, conditional knockout mouse models, and human organoid co-cultures to uncover disease mechanisms from mouse to human. Ideal for candidates interested in immunology, inflammation, and advanced experimental technologies.
AG Triantafyllopoulou: Reprogramming of innate immune - tissue units in inflammatory bowel disease. PhD student to investigate how macrophages and innate lymphoid cells shape immune responses and tissue homeostasis in inflammatory bowel disease. The project will explore the cellular interactions that drive chronic intestinal inflammation and identify mechanisms that promote tissue repair and barrier function.
What we are looking for
We seek highly motivated PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who
- hold an M.Sc. (for PhD applicants) in a relevant field, with prior research experience
- demonstrate strong scientific curiosity, independence, and a collaborative mindset
- contribute actively to the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments and/or computational analyses
- engage in interdisciplinary collaborations within the TRR 241 and with partner institutions
- communicate scientific results effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- develop intellectually owned research directions and pursue scientific visibility (e.g., publications, conference presentations)
- participate in mentoring, training, and community activities within the research environment

Information regarding the position
- Paygrade E13 according to TVöD VKA-K. Your job grade depends on your job qualification whereas the experience level depends on the number of working years. The yearly gross salary is hereby provided based on a full time position excluding yearly bonus and additional pay. You may find further information here
