Working at Charité

The Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is dedicated to biomedical translation. Its mission is to translate research findings into personalized prevention, diagnostics, and therapies to benefit patients and provide the scientific community with effective tools. With approximately 750 employees, the BIH specializes in translational method development, precision medicine, regenerative therapies, and biomedical data science. Closely integrated with Charité, the BIH promotes excellent research and facilitates the accelerated transfer of new discoveries into clinical practice through its supporting platforms and programs. Through these efforts, the BIH builds strong partnerships and fosters innovation-driven medicine in both national and international contexts.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Microbial Systems Biology for the research group of Dr. Johannes Hartl, starting June 1, 2026, for a fixed term until May 31, 2029, full-time (38.5 hours/week).

Join us in exploring how microbes interact with and infect the human host. Specifically, this project investigates why yeast species and isolates differ in their ability to cause bloodstream infections, focusing on the molecular and physiological adaptations of both host and pathogen that drive these differences. In our lab, we leverage a growing collection of clinical and environmental yeast isolates and combine classical molecular biology with high‑throughput phenotyping and state‑of‑the‑art omics approaches, particularly mass spectrometry‑based metabolomics and proteomics.

The position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project "FungalPath". The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team working in a dynamic research area, with access to state-of-the-art technologies and support from experienced staff.

What you can expect

  • An exciting position at the interface of medical microbiology and systems biology
  • Integration and analysis of large-scale molecular, phenotypic, and clinical data
  • Application of systems biology approaches to analyze omics data (in particular metabolomics and proteomics)
  • Contribution to and design of experimental studies (e.g., mass spectrometry-based analyses), depending on experience and interest
  • Interpretation of results in a biological and medical context

What you bring along

  • PhD in life/natural sciences (ideally systems biology, bioinformatics, or related field)
  • Formal background in bioinformatics / related field, or documented experience in analysis of large-scale biological datasets
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • A background or strong interest in microbiology, infection biology or related fields
  • Reliable working ethics
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken
  • Excellent communication of scientific results

What we offer you

  • A varied job in a forward-looking research institute
  • Pay group E13 TVöD VKA-K. The classification is based on qualifications, the respective experience level is calculated on the basis of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is stated for a full-time position without special or additional payments. The collective agreement can be found here.
  • Additional benefits customary in the public sector (including annual special payment, company pension scheme (VBL), capital-forming benefits)
  • Flexible working hours and the option of working remote
  • 30 vacation days per year (with a five-day week)
  • Various support offers to balance work and family life (childcare, cooperation with voiio)
  • Training and further education opportunities
  • Mobile citizens' office on site
  • Corporate benefits (travel, leisure, shopping, etc.), Wellhub, JobRad
  • Very easily accessible and attractive workplace at the Rahel Hirsch Center for Translational Medicine, Luisenstr. 65, 10117 Berlin and Campus Mitte, Charitéplatz 1, 10117 Berlin
