Working at Charité

The Ralser Laboratory at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, renowned for its pioneering work in cellular metabolism, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d) to join our ERC-funded project "Unraveling the complexity of fungal drug tolerance at multiple scales of biology” as soon as possible. This position offers an exciting research opportunity in metal biology and microbial drug resistance, utilizing cutting-edge ICP-MS technology to explore novel mechanisms of antifungal tolerance.

You will work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment with international collaborators, access to state-of-the-art technologies, and exceptional opportunities for professional development and publication in this emerging field.

Overview of the position

  • Conducting CP-MS analyses to investigate metal biology in microorganisms with a special focus on pathogenic fungi.
  • Analysis of metal ion distributions in different microbial systems to investigate resistance mechanisms against antimicrobial substances.
  • Development and optimization of methods for metal ion quantification in biological samples.
  • Examination of the interactions between metal ions and antimicrobial agents and their influence on microbial growth and tolerance.
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary research teams for integration of metallomic data into comprehensive studies on microbial resistance and tolerance mechanisms.
  • Presentation of research results at national and international conferences and publication in scientific journals.

Scientific employees are given sufficient time for their own scientific work in accordance to their employment relationship.

What we are looking for

  • PhD in Natural Sciences, in particular Analytical Chemistry, or Chemical Biology
  • Profound knowledge of ICP-MS technology and experience in conducting metallomic analyses
  • Background in metal biology, with an interest in applying this knowledge to microbial resistance, antimicrobial agents, proteomics, or metabolomics
  • Proficiency in biological data analysis or a strong motivation to obtain the required skills (e.g. basic scripting and programming) is desirable
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • High motivation and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken
  • Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong work ethic

Charité offers you

  • Being integrated into a large interdisciplinary team, with a focus on proteomics, proteome data analysis, and microbiome research
  • Translational research on metal ion biology and metabolic cooperation in Candida albicans, leveraging extensive strain collections and proteomics/metabolomics platforms
  • Interdisciplinary work within a leading metabolomics and systems biology group at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of Europe's largest research-oriented university hospitals, with partners including Tel Aviv University
  • Access to high throughput technology, comprehensive training, and professional development opportunities
  • High personal responsibility and scope for independent research
