Working at Heidecker Lab
The vision of our laboratory is to enable the early diagnosis of cardiomyopathies and to develop precision medicine approaches, with a particular focus on inflammatory cardiomyopathies. These conditions are among the most common causes of sudden cardiac death in young adults, yet they remain underdiagnosed, and treatment options are still limited.
Our research spans the full translational spectrum:
- Clinical work focuses on improving early detection directly in patient care.
- Laboratory work aims to uncover the underlying pathomechanisms of inflammatory cardiomyopathies and heart failure, with the goal of identifying and developing personalized therapies.
Because we collect samples directly from our patients in clinic, our research is highly translational and designed to impact clinical practice in the near future. We collaborate closely with industry partners to accelerate the transfer of discoveries from bench to bedside.
Your area of responsibility
As a PhD student in our lab, you will play a central role in identifying novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets for inflammatory cardiomyopathies and heart failure using methods such as:
- RNA isolation
- Proteome and gene expression analysis
- Immunofluorescence microscopy
- Cell function and viability assays
- iPSC culture, cardiomyocyte differentiation, and cardiomyocyte–fibroblast co-cultures
Beyond experimental work, you will:
- Present your findings in lab meetings, with collaborators, and at international conferences
- Gain experience in study design, IRB/ethics applications, and manuscript as well as grant writing
You will join a highly motivated and collaborative team that thrives within Berlin’s vibrant and cutting-edge biomedical research environment, where enthusiasm and productivity go hand in hand. We have an extensive international network and ongoing transatlantic projects with our partners. We provide an open and supportive environment that encourages you to contribute your own ideas and develop novel methods to address translational, clinical, and basic research questions. Prof. Dr. Bettina Heidecker, MD, FESC, FACC, brings nearly 20 years of experience mentoring international students in the field of inflammatory cardiomyopathies, having trained them at Johns Hopkins, University of Miami, UCSF, University of Zurich, and now at Charité.
