Working at Charité

The Ralser Laboratory at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is internationally recognized for its cutting-edge research in cellular metabolism and systems biology. As part of our ambition to understand the human microbiome,we are offering a PhD position for a talented and motivated doctoral researcher to investigate metabolic interactions in complex microbial communities. This project focuses on dominating bacterial species in the microbiome, with a particular emphasis on understanding how spatial organization influences microbial cooperation, competition, and resistance. The successful candidate will apply advanced methodologies in microbiology, proteomics, and spatial omics to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions. Job overview

  • Conduct experimental research in microbial systems with a focus on metabolically active community members
  • Apply proteomics and spatial omics techniques to map functional and spatial relationships within microbial consortia
  • Investigate microbial interaction networks and their role in antimicrobial resistance and metabolic cooperation
  • Develop and optimize experimental protocols in line with the project’s scientific goals
  • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams across microbiology, systems biology, and bioinformatics
  • Present your findings at national and international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Engage in scientific activities aligned with your doctoral training and academic development
  • You are employed as a research assistant: According to §110 (4), sentence 3, the BerlHG provides academic staff with an appropriate amount of time within their working hours for their own further academic qualification
  • In accordance with the Teaching Obligations Ordinance (LVVO) to the Berlin Higher Education Act, you have the obligation to teach in your field of work

Danach suchen wir

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience in microbiological techniques and/or proteomics workflows; familiarity with spatial omics is a plus
  • Strong interest in microbial ecology, host-microbe interactions, and systems-level biology
  • High level of motivation, scientific curiosity, and ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English (spoken and written)

  • Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services
