Working at the Charité

The junior research group “Subcellular Optogenetics” at the Campus Mitte of the Charité is looking for a research assistant for the development and establishment of new optogenetic tools for memory research. As part of the service project “Development of molecular tools for manipulating and studying memory engrams” of the SFB1315 on mechanisms of memory consolidation, we are developing protein-based light switches with which the activity and state of individual cells in the brain can be precisely controlled in time and space. Our research focuses on both the mechanism and the application of the light-sensitive proteins used. 

Job Overview

  • Independent scientific and experimental work on a research topic
  • Application of cell culture and molecular biology techniques (cell cultivation, mutagenesis, cloning, protein expression and protein biochemistry) 
  • Conception and design of new optogenetic tools for the Neurosciences
  • Characterization of new optogenetic tools using electrophysiological methods and live cell imaging
  • Development of new subcellular expression strategies and their evaluation using confocal microscopy and immunological staining
  • Supervision of Master and Bachelor students
  • Writing of scientific contributions and publications

Required:

  • Completed Master's degree (or equivalent) in a field relevant to the project (biology, physics, biochemistry, computer science, neuroscience)

  • Practical laboratory experience and basic knowledge in handling biological samples

  • Basic knowledge and experience with computer-aided data analysis and presentation (e.g. Excel, Word, Powerpoint)

  • Independent, committed and reliable way of working, good observation skills, ability to work in a team and interest and enjoyment in biological questions

  • Good knowledge of English to work in an international team

Further advantages are: 

  • Theoretical and practical experience with electrophysiological measurement methods
  • Experience with working on cell cultures and with handling neuronal primary cultures
  • Experience and basic knowledge in molecular live cell imaging
  • Basic knowledge and interest in photobiological processes

Job Information

  • Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services
  • The working time is part-time with 25 hours per week
  • At our company 30 days of vacation are standard
  • The position is limited until 30.06.2026, as it is tied to the project duration
