Company describtion

The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is medical translation: transferring biomedical research findings into novel approaches to personalized prediction, prevention, diagnostics and therapies and, conversely, using clinical observations to develop new research ideas. The aim is to deliver relevant medical benefits to patients and the population at large. Since 2021 the BIH has been integrated into Charité as its so-called third pillar.

For the group Prof. Dr. Ludovic Vallier starting from the earliest possible date limited until 31.12.2029 we are looking for a Research Fellow (d/f/m) in full-time (38,5h/week).

The Vallier Lab based at the BCRT will takes advantage of human induced pluripotent stem cells and primary organoids to understand liver development in human and to generate cells with a clinical interest for modelling diseases and for cell-based therapies applications. More precisely, the Vallier Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms controlling cell fate decisions during human development and exploits the resulting knowledge to produce liver cells, especially hepatocytes and cholangiocytes.

What you can expect

  • The candidate will join the ERC project FunChol which aims to uncover new mechanisms driving chronic liver disease and to identify targets for therapeutic development.
  • The role of the candidate will be to investigate the mechanisms by which metabolic disorders can affect the liver but also other organs such as the heart and the brain.
  • For that, they will use hiPSCs to generate liver, cardiac and neuronal cells in vitro. The resulting will be then grown on organ on chip in presence of factors inducing metabolic disease.
  • The resulting cells will be then characterized for their transcriptome, epigenetic state and proteomic signature.
  • Results obtained in vitro will be validated using fresh tissue samples and in vivo models for metabolic disorders.

What you bring along

  • Master degree or equivalent in stem cell biology.
  • Strong experience in tissue culture, especially with human pluripotent stem and organoids, differentiation, and characterization.
  • Solid background in disease modelling.
  • Experience with genome editing.
  • Experience in flow cytometry, QPCR, expression profiling, confocal imaging, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and ChIP-Seq.
  • Experience in working independently while keeping a strong team spirit.
  • Strong self-motivation, organizational skills, and ability to lead and develop scientific projects.

What we offer you

  • A varied job in a forward-looking research institute
  • Pay group E13 TVöD VKA-K. The classification is based on qualifications, the respective experience level is calculated on the basis of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is stated for a full-time position without special or additional payments. The collective agreement can be found here.
  • Additional benefits customary in the public sector (including annual special payment, company pension scheme (VBL), capital-forming benefits)
  • Flexible working hours and the option of working remote
  • 30 vacation days per year (with a five-day week)
  • Various support offers to balance work and family life (childcare, cooperation with voiio)
  • Very good training and further education opportunities
  • Mobile citizens' office on site
  • Corporate benefits (travel, leisure, shopping, etc.), Charité Gympass, JobRad
  • Very easily accessible and attractive workplace at Föhrer. Str. 15 in Campus Virchow-Klinikum, 13353 Berlin
