Working at the Charité

Aim of the project: The aim of this doctoral thesis is to develop an in vitro test battery for the preclinical evaluation of new osteoporosis therapeutics. The test battery will serve as an alternative to animal testing and help to significantly reduce the number of animal experiments required. The aim is to test both the efficacy and safety of new active substances, taking into account endpoints in accordance with the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Job Overview

Methodology:

  • Establishment and optimization of an in vitro bone model to simulate osteoporotic conditions (preliminary work available)
  • Isolation, cultivation and differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells/ osteoblasts and monocytes/osteoclasts (preliminary work available)
  • Investigation of the effects of potential therapeutics on bone cells using modern cell biology and molecular biology methods (e.g. qPCR, Western blot, immunofluorescence staining, immunoassays, µCT) (some preliminary work available)
  • Integration of 3D cell culture techniques and co-culture systems in modern bioreactor setups for physiological imaging of the bone microenvironment (some preliminary work available)
  • Validation of the test battery using established reference substances

Required:

  • Completed university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related field
  • Very good knowledge of flow cytometry, qPCR analysis and cell culture
  • Experience with cell culture techniques and 3D models, molecular biology methods, cell biology analyses, on-a-chip systems
  • Interest in translational research and alternative methods to animal testing
  • This is a collaborative project with the Bf3R, which requires an independent, structured way of working and a strong ability to work in a team
  • Very good written and spoken English skills

Job Information

  • Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services.
  • The working time is part-time with 25 hours per week
  • At our company 30 days of vacation are standard
