Charité Universitätsmedizin - Berlin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. The Institute of Virology at Charité Campus Mitte (Director: Prof. Drosten) has about 100 employees and 9 independent research groups. The institute is home to an international team of researchers who work on various viruses in a collegial atmosphere. Personal initiative, collegiality and a sense of responsibility are highly valued. To strengthen our team in the “Global Health” work area, we are looking for a Technical Assistant to carry out a GIZ-funded project. The aim is to establish a sustainable infrastructure for diagnostics and vaccine testing (including animal models) in Ghana. Job Overview

  • Development and establishment of diagnostics under scientific guidance as part of a research project in Ghana
  • Support in the establishment of an animal testing facility 
  • Working with infectious cell cultures (BSL2 & BSL3)
  • Supporting the planning and implementation of laboratory experiments and other research activities
  • Support in training of junior scientists in laboratory techniques (mainly serology)
  • Testing of samples (wildlife, livestock, humans in contact with animals) for the presence of novel viruses: nucleic acid extraction, conventional PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, agarose gels, bacterial work, cloning, sequencing
  • Virological work: Transfection, virus collection, concentration and titer determination
  • Standard biochemistry techniques, such as immunofluorescence tests, neutralization tests, western blot, ELISA, protein purification
  • Detailed documentation, analysis and evaluation of experiments
  • Set-up and organization of laboratory equipment (incl. contact with manufacturers, suppliers)
  • After a familiarization phase at the Institute of Virology in Berlin, the assignment will take place during the project implementation in Kumasi, Ghana

Required:

  • Completed training as MTA/BTA/CTA or similar with very good grades
  • Experience in handling infectious material
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques (PCR, nucleic acid extraction, etc.)
  • Knowledge of serological working techniques (immunofluorescence, neutralization assays, ELISA, etc.)
  • Work experience with animal test models is an advantage
  • Very good organizational and communication skills, commitment and ability to work in a team
  • Careful way of working and conscientious documentation of work
  • PC skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • Willingness to work in Ghana for a longer period of time
  • Open-mindedness and intercultural competence; work experience in an international context is an advantage

Job Information

  • Salary group E9b according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services. You can find the collective agreement here
  • The working time is full-time with 38.5 hours per week
    At our company 30 days of vacation are standard
