Working at the Charité

Charité Universitätsmedizin - Berlin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. The Institute of Virology at Charité Campus Mitte (Director: Prof. Drosten) has about 100 employees and 9 independent research groups. The institute is home to an international team of researchers who work on various viruses in a collegial atmosphere. Personal initiative, collegiality and a sense of responsibility are highly valued. To strengthen our team in the “Global Health” work area, we are looking for a Research Scientist or a Postdoc to carry out a GIZ-funded project. The aim is to establish a sustainable infrastructure for diagnostics and vaccine testing (including animal models) in Ghana. Job Overview

  • Development and establishment of diagnostics including animal test models as part of a research project in Ghana

  • Establishment of a serology testing and training laboratory in Kumasi, Ghana

  • Establishment and management of the local serology laboratory team, instruction and training of junior scientists in laboratory techniques (ELISA, neutralization tests, immunofluorescence, plaque assays, cell culture, etc.)

  • Planning and implementation of serological training and research activities for educational purposes

  • Establishment of routine laboratory operations

  • Planning, implementation and follow-up of international workshops

  • Autonomous writing of project reports and publications

  • Setting up and organizing laboratory equipment (including contact with manufacturers and suppliers)

     

  • After an introductory phase at the Institute of Virology in Berlin, this position will mostly be based in Kumasi, Ghana

     

  • Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship (in accordance with § 110 BerlHG)

Required:

  • Completed university studies in the natural sciences, incl. doctorate
  • Knowledge of serological working techniques (ELISA, neutralization assays, immunofluorescence, etc.)
  • Knowledge in the analysis of serological data sets
  • Knowledge in the field of cell culture
  • Experience in preclinical vaccine development and testing (incl. animal models) is an advantage
  • Experience in the guidance and supervision of junior scientists
  • Experience in personnel responsibility is an advantage
  • Very good organizational and communication skills, commitment and ability to work in a team
  • High degree of independence, initiative and personal responsibility
  • PC skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)- Very good knowledge of English
  • Willingness to work in Ghana for a longer period of time
  • Open-mindedness and intercultural competence; work experience in an international context an advantage

Job Information

  • Salary group E14 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services. You can find the collective agreement here
  • The working time is full-time with 38.5 hours per week
  • At our company 30 days of vacation are standard
  • The position is limited until 30.11.2027, as it is tied to the project duration
