Working at the Charité

Madagascar is currently experiencing a growing HIV epidemic inadequately addressed by existing policies and funders. The CAREMA project seeks to bridge this gap by bringing together research, civil society, and policy partners to enhance HIV prevention and control strategies by generating actionable scientific evidence.The focus will be on enhancing HIV surveillance and preventing mother-to-child transmission in the Toliara I district while fostering cross-sectoral dialogue and evidence generation through a community-based participatory approach. We are seeking a dynamic senior researcher to ensure scientific coordination of the project.

Job Overview

Project coordination:

  • Develop and maintain project timelines, adjusting work plans as necessary
  • Ensure compliance with project goals, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Serve as the primary contact point for partners and stakeholders, facilitating communication between them
  • Organize and schedule meetings, workshops, and events, ensuring full participation and engagement

Research and cross-sectoral collaboration:

  • Strengthen the HIV Exchange Group and foster the development of a research consortium to improve HIV responses in Madagascar
  • Manage the preparation of progress reports, policy briefs, and scientific manuscripts
  • Support project partners in designing and implementing data collection tools
  • Conduct field visits to monitor program implementation and ensure data quality

Financial management: 

  • Manage the project’s budget, ensuring expenses remain within financial limits
  • Prepare financial reports for submission to funding bodies
  • Identify additional funding opportunities as necessary

You are scientifically active: According to § 110 (4), sentence 3, the BerlHG provides scientific employees with an appropriate amount of time within their working hours for their own further scientific qualification.

Required:

  • Advanced university degree (e.g., MD, PhD) in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field
  • At least 8 years of professional research experience, with a focus on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV
  • Proficiency in statistical software (Stata, R) and experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Strong management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across sectors and disciplines
  • Proven track record in coordinating research activities in sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on HIV or STIs
  • Familiarity with the challenges of last-mile health service delivery in low-income, rural contexts
  • Work experience in the Malagasy health system or in collaborating with Malagasy rpartners is a plus
  • Language proficiency: French and English (at least C1); Malagasy and German (at least A2)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-cultural, cross-sectoral environment
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cross-cultural issues and equity in international collaborations
  • Willingness and availability to be seconded to a Spanish or Malagasy partner institution, if required

Job Information

  • Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services. You can find the collective agreement here
